High energy – a positive outlook – a healthy future – feeling and looking good…these are just a few of the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle. More importantly, modest improvements in health can also significantly reduce the risk of many chronic conditions that are related to poor lifestyle choices. Evidence-based practices have demonstrated that each of us can significantly improve our personal health by practicing four key health behaviors:
Maintain a healthy diet
Engage in regular physical activity
Get an annual physical examination; and
Avoid tobacco use
Taking personal responsibility to manage these measures can also lead to reduced health care costs and an enhanced ability to perform at our best on the job – a positive for both our organization and our employees.
Over the past year we experienced a large amount of claims that unfortunately is resulting in an increase to our insurance rates. In an effort to minimize these rate increases, we made the decision to go back to AETNA as they offered the least amount of increases. If we all commit to taking the steps outlined above, I am confident we can limit the increases for next year and eventually get to the point where we are not forced to raise rates.
